Should You Hire for Passion or Experience?

When you’re going to hire a new employee for your small business, you might wonder if you should hire for passion or experience.

Is it more important to have a new employee who displays drive or determination for the position company or industry, or is it more relevant to hire someone who already has the needed skills and experience to do the job well?

This is a common question and debate between small business owners. Watch this video to learn my opinion on whether you should hire for passion or experience when it’s time to select an employee for your opening.

Should You Hire for Passion or Experience?

When it comes to hiring for your small business, should you hire for passion or skill? Which one is more important and will get you more success within your company?

My opinion is that you need to hire for both.

When you have a small business, you need people full of passion, drive, and determination. You need people who are going to jump in and do whatever it takes to achieve goals and make the business thrive. After all, within small businesses there is often a lot to do, things move quickly, and employees tend to wear many hats.

However, at the same time, you need people with experience. You need people who come in knowing the skills that the company needs at that time.

You’re hiring for a reason, and that reason is typically either because:

  • You lack a particular skill set within the company.
  • You lack time.

This means that you either don’t have time to train the new employee or you don’t know how to teach the employee. They must come in with the know-how to do the job, and you just have to train them on company specifics.

Don’t hire for just one thinking the other will come later. The best hire is going to have the minimum skills and experiences to do the job AND have the passion that is needed for business success.
